Are Squarespace Templates Free?

A commonly asked question I see about Squarespace and its many template options is, “Are Squarespace templates free,” or “do I have to pay for them?”

As you might have guessed, the answer to this is more complicated than a simple yes or no!

While Squarespace does offer free template options, there are also a plethora of paid template options coming from Squarespace website designers, which you may decide fit your business better.

Today, this Squarespace and Showit website designer is breaking down Squarespace’s template options and prices, ranging from free to paid. Let’s dive in!

Templates through Squarespace

One of my favorite things about Squarespace is the way in which it caters to a range of businesses, including in its template options (+ their pricing.)

Squarespace does offer generalized, free templates that are designed to work for a wide range of businesses. (You can check out these templates here.)

As I mentioned, you will find that these templates aren’t terribly specific to any niche, so if you decide to take this route, it will require a decent amount of customization in order for the website to fit your business’s needs.

However, free is free, and if you’re just starting out, this may be a great option for you to have a home base online without investing tons of money.

Just note that you still need to pay for hosting your website through Squarespace regardless.

Templates from Squarespace Website Designers

If you’re looking for a website that is unique to your business niche and boasts all the bells and whistles that will help your site run smoothly for you and your customers or clients, I definitely recommend exploring paid templates from Squarespace website designers.

They typically range in price from $150-$400.

You can always go the personal designer route, and hire a Squarespace and Showit website designer that will work closely with you to design a custom website for your business, featuring all the capabilities you would like, but purchasing a custom, pre-made template is an option, too.

Common Template Shops

If you decide to build your website using a premade template by a designer, there are a variety of resources and shops where you can find them.

Here are some of my favorites:

  • GoLiveHQ. This website template shop is perfect for finding clean, well-designed templates at reasonable prices.

  • Big Cat Creative. Big Cat Creative has been a favorite for website owners everywhere for a long time now! Their templates come with in-depth tutorials, and help you design a website that is custom to your needs.

  • Wellness Site Shop. These templates are great for wellness/health coaches and entrepreneurs.

  • Kate Scott. Her website has a couple Squarespace templates geared towards service providers and course creators.

  • Lauren Taylar (hey that’s me!) Not exactly Squarespace, but you can check out my Showit website templates that are perfect for online coaches and service providers. Stay tuned for more info! And if you’re looking for customization, I offer a VIP website design day service!

Which template option should you choose?

I think this really depends on what your business is, and what layout is appealing to you. For the Squarespace free templates on their website, you’ll notice that the options for service based businesses and online coaches aren’t that great.

Whereas for the website templates created by other Squarespace website designers, their templates have more personality and more options for those types of businesses. Not to mention that they include step by step tutorial videos and guides on building your website.

With the Squarespace free templates, you’re on your own when it comes to customizing the free template. You’ll have to dive into their help pages or scour YouTube videos.

However, if you’re a restaurant owner or musician, Squarespace’s directory of templates has some decent options.

While premade templates are perfect for some business owners, especially those just starting out, those looking to scale significantly in the coming months or establish themselves as a professional presence against competitors should consider investing in a Squarespace and Showit website designer in order to have a website designed specifically for their brand and their business’s needs.
