Expert SEO Tips for Coaches to Attract More Clients Online

If you want to rank higher on Google, having a strong online presence is key for coaches looking to attract more clients online.

One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through search engine optimization (SEO). By optimizing your website and content for search engines, you can increase your visibility and reach a wider audience.

As an SEO expert, I love helping my clients (who are mainly online coaches) improve their online search presence. I've been in the SEO world since 2016, so I have quite a bit of experience to pull from.

In this article, we will explore expert SEO tips specifically tailored for coaches, helping them to attract more clients on autopilot and establish themselves as leaders in their field.

Whether you're a health coach, social media coach, business coach, or life coach, these strategies will help you convert website traffic into valuable leads.

So let's dive in and discover the power of SEO for coaches to help you rank higher on Google.

SEO vs advertising

When it comes to attracting clients online, there are two primary methods: search engine optimization (SEO) and advertising.

Understanding the differences between these two strategies is crucial for coaches looking to make the most out of their online presence.

SEO, also known as organic search, involves optimizing your website and content to rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs). It involves making strategic changes to your website's structure, content, and metadata to improve its visibility to search engines like Google.

The goal of SEO is to increase your website's organic (unpaid) traffic and attract targeted visitors who are actively searching for the services you offer.

On the other hand, advertising involves paying for placements or impressions on various platforms such as search engines, social media, or display networks. This includes running ads on platforms like Google Ads, Facebook Ads, or LinkedIn Ads.

Advertising allows you to reach a wider audience and generate immediate visibility for your coaching services.

However, it requires a budget and ongoing investment. The moment you stop throwing money into ads, the leads start coming in.

Why is SEO important for coaches?

For coaches, having a strong online presence is crucial to attract potential clients. When people are searching for a coach, they typically turn to search engines like Google to find the right fit for their needs.

By implementing effective SEO strategies, coaches can ensure that their website appears high in search engine results, making it more likely that potential clients will find and visit their site.

Identify Your Target Keywords

Before you can optimize your website for search engines, it's important to identify the keywords that your target audience is using to search for your services. This is called keyword research.

Put yourself in your ideal client's shoes and think about what they would type into a search engine.

Use keyword research tools like Ubersuggest or SEMrush to find relevant keywords with a good search volume and low competition.

Create a keyword list of phrases that represent the following:

  1. Type of work you do (i.e. “business coach for women," “business coach for female entrepreneurs” etc)

  2. Topics you help your clients with through your services and products (i.e. marketing on social media, running sales calls, growing a team, etc)

Expert tip: the main pages of your website (i.e. about page and all services pages) and blog posts should target a specific keyword that is unique to that page.

So once you're done with keyword research, you want to “map” (or in other words “assign”) a primary keyword to each main page of your website:

  • About

  • Private Coaching

  • Group Coaching

  • Other Services or Programs

  • Shop (if you have one)

  • Blog

Many times your home page's primary keyword will just be your brand/company name but if you find a keyword you want to use that encompasses your entire business, feel free to add it.

Note it somewhere (I personally love Google Sheets) so that you can come back to it.

Include relevant keywords in page titles, copy, and meta descriptions

Now that you have your primary keyword for each page mapped out, you want to add them to the important content and technical areas of your website.

Page titles

Page titles are also known as title tags.

When creating page titles, make sure to include keywords that accurately describe the content of the page and match the search intent of potential clients.

Follow this format:

  • Homepage: [Business Name] | Primary keyword

  • Other pages: Primary keyword | [Business name]

Keep your title tags to 55-60 characters max. Otherwise, they will get cut off in the Google search results.

Examples:

  • Home Page: Hannah Nolan | Business and Mindset Coaching

  • Private Coaching Page: Business Coaching for Female Entrepreneurs | Hannah Nolan

Meta descriptions

Crafting a compelling meta description is crucial for enticing clicks to your website. While it doesn't directly affect rankings, it plays a vital role in improving your click-through rate.

Example for the about page: Hannah Nolan is a business coach who supports female entrepreneurs with both mindset and strategy. Learn more about her story.

Optimizing content with relevant keywords

Your primary keywords should be mentioned 2-3 times within the copy on each main page of your website.

However, be mindful not to overdo it and make sure your content flows naturally and provides value to your readers.

The last thing you want is for your blog post to read like a robot.

Optimize Your Website Structure

Importance of a well-structured website for user experience and search engines

A well-structured website is essential for both user experience and search engines. When your website is organized and easy to navigate, it allows visitors to find the information they need quickly and efficiently.

This improves the overall user experience, making it more likely for visitors to stay on your site and explore further.

Additionally, search engines like Google prioritize websites with good structure, as it helps them understand the content and rank it appropriately in search results.

By optimizing your website's structure, you can enhance both the user experience and your search engine visibility, ultimately attracting more clients to your coaching business.

Clear hierarchy with the main navigation menu and submenus

A clear hierarchy with a main navigation menu and submenus is crucial for organizing your website's content and guiding visitors to find what they're looking for.

When designing your website's navigation, make sure to have a main menu that includes the most important pages or categories of your coaching services.

Submenus can then be used to further break down these categories and provide more specific information.

Or it may be more impactful to put all other pages in the footer where they are not distracting to the user.

This not only makes it easier for visitors to navigate your site, but it also helps search engines understand the structure of your website and index your pages more effectively.

Expert tip: keep your navigation streamlined with 3-5 options if possible to reduce analysis paralysis. The least important pages can go in the footer.

URL Structure

It's important for Google to understand how pages relate to one another. If you have a main “services” page and then 2-3 sub-pages, you want your URL structure to reflect that.

For example:

  • yourdomain.com/services

  • yourdomain.com/services/private-coaching

  • yourdomain.com/services/group-coaching

  • yourdomain.com/services/mastermind

Create High-Quality Content

What is this high-quality content I'm speaking of?

BLOGGING.

And no, blogging isn't dead ;)

Importance of high-quality and relevant content

There are several reasons to blog, but here are a few…

When it comes to attracting more clients and showcasing your expertise online, high-quality and relevant content is crucial. Not only does it help you establish yourself as an authority in your coaching niche, but it also allows you to provide valuable information and solutions to your potential clients.

By consistently creating informative and engaging content, you can build trust with your audience and position yourself as a go-to resource in your industry.

Additionally, search engines love fresh and valuable content, so regularly updating your website with high-quality blog posts, articles, or videos can greatly improve your SEO rankings and attract more organic traffic to your coaching business.

Remember, content is key to establishing your online presence and attracting clients on autopilot.

Showcase skills and expertise through blog posts

1. Understand your audience: Before creating content, it's important to understand your target audience's needs, pain points, and interests.

Conduct market research, engage with your audience on social media, and ask for feedback to gather insights. This will help you tailor your content to their specific needs and preferences.

2. Choose relevant topics: Once you know your audience, brainstorm topics that are relevant to their interests and align with your coaching services.

Consider what questions they may have, what challenges they face, and what solutions you can provide. This will ensure that your content is valuable and addresses their specific needs.

Using the business coach example again. You should have keywords relating to these topics: how to find clients online, tips for closing sales calls, reasons to use social media every day to get leads and clients, importance of a lead magnet, etc.

Use keyword research to then validate these ideas if you haven't already done this in the initial stage.

Think of this content as teaching potential clients and customers through your blog posts.

3. Provide actionable tips and advice: When creating content, aim to provide actionable tips, advice, and strategies that your audience can implement in their own lives.

This not only positions you as an expert in your field but also provides value to your readers. Remember, the more value you provide, the more likely they are to trust you and seek your services.

4. Use a variety of formats: Don't limit yourself to just one type of content. Experiment with different formats such as blog posts, videos, podcasts, or infographics.

This allows you to cater to different learning styles and preferences, making your content more accessible and engaging.

Optimize the content

Remember that each keyword correlates to a single blog post topic.

That keyword should be mentioned:

  • In the title

  • In the URL

  • 3-4 times (for every 1000 words) within the body of the post

  • Blog post headings (only if natural looking)

  • Image file names

This helps Google understand that your post is directly related to that keyword, giving you a greater chance of ranking.

Include internal links for navigation and SEO

Having high-quality and relevant content is crucial for SEO success.

As a coach, you have valuable knowledge and expertise to share, so create content that showcases your skills and helps your target audience. Write informative blog posts, create engaging videos, or record podcasts that provide value to your audience.

Don't forget to include internal links to other pages on your website to improve navigation and SEO.

You'll notice I have many internal links in this post.

Using descriptive and keyword-rich URLs

As touched on above, using descriptive and keyword-rich URLs is another important aspect of optimizing your website for search engines.

Instead of using generic URLs like "yourdomain.com/page1", try to incorporate relevant keywords into your URLs to provide more context to both search engines and visitors.

For example, if you're a health coach offering meal planning services, a URL like "yourdomain.com/meal-planning-tips" would be more descriptive and keyword-rich.

This not only helps search engines understand the content of your page, but it also gives potential clients a better idea of what to expect when they click on your link.

By using descriptive and keyword-rich URLs, you can improve your website's visibility in search results and attract more targeted traffic to your coaching business.

Optimize your images

Optimizing images is another important aspect of SEO for coaches looking to attract more clients on autopilot. When adding images to your website, make sure to use descriptive file names that include relevant keywords.

This not only helps search engines understand what the image is about, but it also improves the accessibility of your website for visually impaired users.

In addition to descriptive file names, it's important to optimize your image alt text. Alt text is a brief description of the image that is displayed if the image fails to load or if the user is using a screen reader. Including relevant keywords in your alt text can help improve your website's visibility in search results and attract more organic traffic.

Furthermore, optimizing the file size of your images is crucial for improving website loading speed. Large image files can significantly slow down your website, leading to a poor user experience and lower search engine rankings. To optimize your images, you can use image compression tools (like tinypng.com) or plugins that reduce the file size without compromising quality.

Build Quality Backlinks

Backlinks are links from other websites that point back to your website. They are an important factor in determining your search engine rankings because they serve as a vote of confidence for your website's credibility and authority.

Search engines view backlinks as an indication that your website is trustworthy and valuable, and therefore, they reward it with higher rankings in search results.

When other reputable websites link to your coaching website, it signals to search engines that your content is worth sharing and referencing. This can significantly impact your SEO by increasing your website's visibility and driving more organic traffic.

However, it's important to note that not all backlinks are created equal. Quality backlinks from authoritative and relevant websites hold more weight than backlinks from low-quality or unrelated websites.

It's better to have a few high-quality backlinks than a large number of low-quality ones.

To build quality backlinks for your coaching website, consider the following strategies:

  1. Guest blogging: Contribute high-quality articles to authoritative websites in your industry and include a link back to your website in your author bio.

  2. Influencer collaborations: Collaborate with influencers or experts in your coaching niche and request them to link back to your website in their content.

  3. Online directories: Submit your coaching website to relevant online directories or industry-specific directories to gain backlinks.

Only build backlinks from websites where it makes sense with your niche. Backlinks for the sake of backlinks is not a smart strategy.

Make your content easy to scan

Break up your website content and blog content in small easy-to-digest sections

Breaking up your website content and blog content into small, easy-to-digest sections is crucial for attracting and engaging potential clients.

When faced with a wall of text, visitors are likely to feel overwhelmed and quickly click away from your site. By breaking up your content into shorter paragraphs, bullet points, and subheadings, you make it easier for people to scan and navigate your site.

This not only improves the user experience but also increases the chances of your audience staying on your site longer, consuming more information, and ultimately converting into leads. Additionally, by organizing your content in this way, you can highlight the most important points and showcase your expertise effectively.

Page time, or the amount of time visitors spend on your website, impacts SEO. When users spend more time on your site, it sends positive signals to search engines that your content is valuable and relevant. This, in turn, can improve your SEO rankings and increase organic traffic to your coaching website.

One of the key factors search engines consider in determining the quality and relevance of a website is user engagement. If visitors quickly click away from your site, it indicates to search engines that your content may not be meeting their needs or expectations. This can negatively impact your SEO rankings and visibility.

On the other hand, if visitors spend a significant amount of time on your website, it signals to search engines that your content is valuable and engaging. This can lead to higher rankings in search engine results pages (SERPs) and increased visibility to potential clients.

Expert tip: promote your lead magnets throughout your website

Creating a free opt-in to promote in your blog posts and on your website is incredibly important for coaches who want to attract more clients on autopilot and showcase their expertise online.

A free opt-in, also known as a lead magnet, is a valuable resource or piece of content that you offer for free in exchange for a visitor's email address.

This allows you to build your email list and establish a direct line of communication with potential clients.

By offering a free opt-in related to your coaching niche, such as a guide, checklist, or e-book, you can demonstrate your expertise and provide value to your audience.

This not only helps to establish trust and credibility, but it also allows you to nurture your leads over time and convert them into paying clients.

Additionally, promoting your free opt-in throughout your blog posts and on your website can increase visibility, drive traffic, and encourage visitors to take action. It's a powerful strategy to attract and engage your target audience while building a strong foundation for long-term success as a coach.

In conclusion, implementing these SEO tips will help coaches attract more clients on autopilot and showcase their expertise online. By identifying target keywords and incorporating them into website content, coaches can improve their visibility in search engine results and attract organic traffic.

Optimizing website structure with clear navigation menus and keyword-rich URLs will also make it easier for search engines to crawl and index the site. Creating high-quality content that showcases skills and expertise, while optimizing it with relevant keywords and internal links, will further enhance SEO performance. Lastly, building quality backlinks will increase website authority and improve search engine rankings.
