Squarespace Mobile View FAQs

As you build your website, one of the most important things you will want to take into consideration is how your interface will appear on a mobile device.

If your website looks stunning and professional on a desktop, but disgruntled and disorganized on a mobile device, you will likely be making a poor impression on a good portion of your visitors.

The reality is that many of your visitors are going to visit your site on a mobile device instead of a desktop.

(Think about all the times you have followed a link to a website from social media, or done a quick search on Google. You were likely on your phone, not your laptop!)

For this reason, it’s important to focus heavily on mobile view as you build your Squarespace website.

At the time of writing this, surprisingly 84% of my traffic comes from desktop and 15% from mobile devices.

However, it’s worth noting that Google is indexing the mobile version of your website, so the advice still stands ;)

Can you edit the mobile view on Squarespace?

You can edit the mobile view on Squarespace, but the good news is that Squarespace automatically creates a stunning mobile view for you from your desktop website!

This can save you a LOT of headaches when it comes to the website building process, and is one of my favorite features as a Squarespace website designer!

However, if you want more control over your mobile website and how it appears to visitors, this is how you can change the backend settings:

On Squarespace 7.0:

From the dashboard, click design, then site styles.

Type “mobile” into the bar and all the settings will appear.

On Squarespace 7.1:

When you click on the different options, you’ll see any available options to edit on mobile.

How do I make my Squarespace site mobile friendly?

Though Squarespace automatically adjusts your desktop site for a responsive mobile design, there are extra steps you can take in order to make your website more mobile friendly by improving loading speed and readability.

AMP

First, you can use AMP (accelerated mobile pages) with Squarespace in order to help your mobile site load faster. Essentially, this feature strips down your website to its most important components and leaves out everything else, without taking away from its functionality.

Resized images

You can also optimize your pages to make sure they each have under 5MB of files to improve loading speed. Most often, the culprit of enormous files are images, so be sure to check them before publishing your mobile site!

Optimal letter spacing

Lastly, you will want letter spacing that is at minimum 0 pts. in order to improve readability on mobile view. Letters that are too close or cluttered make for a disastrous experience for visitors on mobile devices, and can really hurt your bounce rate!

How do I preview the mobile website in Squarespace?

You can take a look at what the mobile version of your Squarespace website looks like by completing the following steps:

On Squarespace 7.0:

On Squarespace 7.1:
