Today, I’m taking you through a website design project for my client, Jennifer.

Jennifer is a Montana-based photographer who shoots weddings, engagements, proposals, and elopements.

There’s nothing I love more than clients that come to me with swoon worthy photos to play around with on the website, and Jennifer is no exception.

When Jennifer came to me, her DIY website was no where close to showcasing her as the extremely talented photographer that she is.

Yes, she was able to still book clients.

Yes, it still “got the job done.”

But it wasn’t a true representation of the quality of her work and her professionalism.

Jennifer isn’t an amateur. She’s got 15 years of photography experience under her belt.

But her website was falling short in displaying the essence of her brand and communicating her expertise.

She had been burned in the past by a website designer and was hesitant to work together, but she knew she needed help.

I was so honored to work with Jennifer on this project. I know that investing in a website designer can be scary and there’s a lot of trust made in that decision to have someone bring your vision to life (which I don’t take lightly!).

Over the course of 3 VIP days, we overhauled every section of her website on Showit (affiliate link).

Since the website launched, Jennifer’s website has already been ranking higher for important keywords and attracting serious inquiries from Google (more on that later), so let’s dive in!

Step 1: Pre-design prep

Jennifer wanted her website to feel elevated, authentic, elegant, sophisticated, romantic, and dreamy.

She had the gorgeous images, but we needed additional visuals to match her vision.

On her old website, the fonts were a little hard to read, especially her script font and paragraph font.

We decided on these fonts:

  • Carson Sans for headings

  • Montserrat for paragraphs

  • Florissant for script accents

This was a more elevated and clean look for the design. Even though it was a subtle change, it made a big difference!

Her old color palette featured a couple of tan/cream shades, but we wanted to spruce it up a little by adding a soft pink.

Here are the colors we chose for the new website beyond black and white.

Step 2: Website Design

Since I was working from Jennifer’s existing website, there were a few aspects that needed fixing. The mobile version needed updating, there were 404 errors, and the design/layout needed to be more user friendly.

It was important to Jennifer that the website showcased her 15+ years of experience through using her photos and videos in a way that would make her ideal clients instantly connect with her.

Over 3 days, we overhauled 10+ pages.

  • Home

  • About

  • Experience main page + 4 sub pages

  • Portfolio/Portfolio Galleries

  • Shop

  • Blog

  • Contact

SEO was also very important, so I did keyword research before I optimized her title tags, meta descriptions, and images.

As with any project, I started with the homepage before moving onto the rest of the pages. We communicated in real time in Slack throughout the dates and were able to move through revisions quickly.

Below are before and after screenshots of the website!

Step 3: Website launch

This project was a beast, but it was so fun!

One of the best parts of the experience? There were many pages where Jennifer requested 0 or very small changes.

That is something I pride myself on since many clients have a similar experience.

Since the website launched, Jennifer’s website has already been ranking higher for important keywords and attracting serious inquiries from Google 🎉

Here is what Jennifer had to say about working together…

“I could happy dance cry. I went through hell and back again with my previous website design and copy and it gave me serious PTSD. And you did beyond what I expected, and this is like a dream come true after almost 15 years of building this dream/business. I couldn't have asked for a better experience, design and leading me and guiding through each stage including copywriters to suggest working with.

From the beginning to the end the detail focus of each thing was wonderful. Things that could easily been looked over like simple font issues, graphic errors, re-directs, page breaks were all thought of, and on top of this the main goal and focus was SEO, and creating a beautiful website with thoughtful images.

I'm super picky, and every single proof you sent my way of your designs was so spot on to my vision, I found myself in constant just happy tears. Thank you so much Lauren, I’m just SO happy with the website and my experience working with you!

Definitely felt supported in this and have absolutely loved everything you've done, and your attention to detail! Anytime I had specific questions, I super appreciated the additional time taken to answer questions.

[1 week after website redesign] I had the most intentional inquiry today for a potential client from Google search that is in budget (so SEO is already starting to work!) and spot on to what I’m wanting to attract. My Google inquiries have been horrible (if at all) so this is huge on my end. Super excited about the future!”

[A day later] The Google search inquiries are continuing to come in right now. I’m mind blown and SO happy!
