Squarespace Fonts and How to Change Them

While it may seem like colors and images are the only important design components on your Squarespace website, fonts actually play a HUGE role, as well.

Fonts can convey mood and tone, and affect readability—making font choice a big one.

Luckily, Squarespace provides many Google fonts available for free use right inside its platform.

Today, I’m covering the free Google fonts that Squarespace offers, and how to change fonts on your Squarespace website.

Free Squarespace Fonts Available

There are a TON of free fonts available inside Squarespace, so I am covering a few of my favorites here (grouped by font type!)

Sans Serif

Sans serif fonts are great for larger bodies of text, captions, and more. Some of my favorites that Squarespace offers right inside its platform are Futura and Lato.

Both of these fonts are light, easy to read, and non-distracting while giving a clean and professional feel.

Serif

Serif fonts can also be used for large bodies of text and captions.

My favorites inside the Squarespace platform are PT Serif and Lora —two classics that are timeless, professional, and a great go-to for paragraphs.

Display

You definitely have to be careful with how you use display fonts on your website—and, as the name suggests, they should only be used for short titles or headings.

This is because they are usually harder to read (especially if used in a small typeface) and can be super distracting for your reader.

They’re great for calling attention to a word like a title, but should be reserved for those types of text. My favorite Squarespace fonts in the display category are Garamond Premier Pro Display and Playfair Display SC.

Script

Like display fonts, script fonts should also be reserved for larger, shorter texts like titles and headings.

(They are also great for some logos!)

There are some decent options inside Squarespace, like Lust Script and Sail. However, I always recommend taking a peek at fonts on Creative Market. They’re not free, but it’s worth the investment to find a font that matches your brand and audience.

Slab Serif

Slab serif fonts are interesting because they are super unique—and give a tech/computer-like feel without being fully telegram-esque.

I love Bitter and Glegoo because they are clean, professional, and fun at the same time.

Mono

Lastly, Squarespace offers several Mono fonts, which are the fonts that look like they would appear on an old typewriter.

I don’t use them in most of my designs as a Squarespace website designer, but they are appropriate for some websites (and can add a timeless touch!)

My favorite inside Squarespace is Courier New. Use this font type carefully, as they can quickly overwhelm readers if used in large bodies of small text.

How to change formatting of fonts

From the main dashboard, you can easily change the format of your font options. Click on design, then site styles.

If you’re using the newest version of Squarespace (7.1), then it may look different for you - as pictured above.

Here are the different aspects you can change:

  • Weight - the thickness of the font

  • Line height - the space between different lines of text

  • Letter spacing - space between individual letters

  • Style - includes normal, bold, italic. You can choose to leave this blank and change it on specific areas of text while editing your Squarespace website

  • Text transform - capitalize or lowercase text. You can also choose “title case,” which will capitalize the first letter of each word

  • Size - change the text to a smaller or larger size

As a Squarespace website designer, one of my favorite features of Squarespace is the plethora of free fonts offered right inside the platform.
