Use long-tail keywords

A keyword can be one word or multiple words. For small business owners, it is best to focus on long tail keywords (a string of 3 words or more).

For example, you could have a goal to rank for “life coach.” However, that is going to be a tough word to rank for if you are just starting your business.

Some long tail keyword options are “life coaching services” or "life coach South Carolina'' if you would like to target people locally.

Long-tail keywords convert better since they are less competitive than normal keywords. They focus more on a niche, helping you attract more ideal clients.

Where to put keywords

Throughout your website, you want to add your keyword in several places.

It’s also important to note that each page of your website should target a different word so that the pages do not compete with each other.

Here are some important places to add keywords:

  • Title tag - a description of your page using only the main keyword and your brand/company name

  • Meta description - a 1-2 sentence description of what the page topic is

  • Website copy - you want to incorporate the main keyword on each page in an organic way so that it doesn’t sound robotic

  • Image file name - the name of your image which helps Google understand what the context is

  • Image alt text - a descriptor so visually impaired people can understand what the image is

Write blog posts that satisfy answers to people’s questions

Once your website is optimized, it's time to write. As you write, make sure your blog posts satisfy answers to questions people search for.

Is the user looking for a specific solution? Is the user looking for a tutorial on how to use a product? Is it a top-ten list or a how-to guide?

Your blog post should, above all things, use the keywords as the main topics of each post.

But to maximize your SEO efforts, give your target audience exactly what they desire — quality, comprehensive, and helpful content.

And over time, reviewing and updating your popular posts will encourage repeat engagement.

The more you write actionable and valuable content, the more people will come back to your blog time and time again.

You’ll be top of mind when someone is ready to invest in services similar to yours.

Similar to above, there are a few key areas to add your main keyword for each post:

  • URL

  • H1 tag (blog post title) 

  • Meta description

  • First sentence or paragraph of your content

  • Throughout the blog post body content 

  • Image file name

  • Image alt text

Your blog posts should be at least 1,000 words - otherwise, Google will not deem them as valuable to searchers.

It’s one thing to attract someone to your website from Google. It’s another to entice them to give them your email address or sign up for a free consultation.
