How to Add a Title Tag to Your Squarespace Pages
Curious about what the heck a title tag is and why it’s important?
As a Squarespace SEO expert for online business owners and consultant for fellow website designers, this is an aspect of optimizing websites that is commonly looked over.
While it most likely won’t make or break your website, title tags certainly have the power to increase your Google search rankings.
When designing websites for clients or running an SEO audit, I never skip over this element. It is, after all, one of the foundations of a website.
If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to writing title tags, don’t worry!
In this post, I’m diving into how to add a title tag, or SEO title, to your Squarespace website.
What is a title tag?
A title tag is simply the title of a page.
This piece of HTML code helps search engines like Google understand the main focus of the page and what it’s about.
Inside Squarespace, this is also known as the “SEO title” of a page. So it can be used interchangeably with the term “title tag.”
How to write a title tag
Your title tag should contain a keyword that you want each page to rank for.
First, you want to do keyword research to identify these exact words and phrases
That’s all a keyword is - a term that you want your website to appear on page 1 of Google for when a user types it into the search bar.
Some of my favorite places to do keyword research are:
Ubersuggest
Moz
SEMrush
You can view all my recommendations for keyword research in more depth here.
Each page should have one primary keyword, and each title tag should be unique per page.
The common format to follow is this:
Homepage: [business name] - [keyword]
Other pages: [keyword] - [business name]
You can also change out the dash (-) for a pipe (|).
So for example - let’s say that you’re an OBM (online business manager) and you want to rank your homepage for the keyword “online business manager.” The name of your business is Sunny's Simple Solutions.
Your title tag would then read:
Sunny's Simple Solutions | Online Business Manager or
Sunny's Simple Solutions - Online Business Manager
See how simple that is? I promise SEO aspects like this don’t have to be scary or complicated.
How to edit the title tag
For your homepage
1. Go to marketing - SEO
2. Remove %s and enter your full title tag
For your other pages
1. Go to pages
2. Click on the gear icon of the page you want to edit
3. Click on SEO, then enter the information
Only include the first part of your title tag here. The business name should populate automatically, which you’ll see in the preview. You don’t want your business name to appear twice since it will look spammy.
Important Note
To change the dash to a pipe for all your pages, you can do that under marketing -> SEO -> pages. Simply remove the dash and replace it with a pipe.
It should appear as %p | %s.
Click save, and you’re all set!
