As an SEO consultant , I get this question a lot: How can you write content that attracts organic traffic and turns visitors into customers?

In this blog post, I'll dive into the world of SEO copywriting and explore how you can write content that not only attracts organic traffic but also converts visitors into customers.

From understanding what SEO copywriting is to measuring its success, I've got you covered with expert tips and strategies. Let's get started on your journey to becoming an SEO copywriting pro!

What is SEO Copywriting?

SEO copywriting is the art of crafting content that not only engages readers but also ranks well on search engines like Google.

By strategically incorporating target keywords and optimizing the structure and format of your content, you can improve your website's visibility and attract more organic traffic.

A keyword is a word or phrase that people are typing into a search bar, such as “destination photographer” or “mindset tips for entrepreneurs.”

Understanding what SEO entails and how it works is crucial for effective copywriting, some of these techniques involve a deep understanding of both writing techniques and SEO principles to achieve higher rankings and conversion rates.

Understanding SEO Copywriting

SEO copywriting is the strategic process of creating content that is optimized for search engines, with the goal of improving a website's ranking and attracting targeted organic traffic.

Unlike traditional copywriting, which focuses on persuasive language to engage readers, SEO copywriting also incorporates keyword research and optimization techniques to align with Google's algorithms and attract more qualified leads.

Effective SEO copywriting involves understanding your target audience's intent and crafting relevant content that addresses their needs while incorporating strategically researched keywords naturally throughout your text.

Why is SEO Copywriting Important?

Role of targeted keywords in attracting organic traffic

Targeted keywords are the backbone of effective SEO copywriting. Through thorough keyword research and strategic placement, you can optimize your content to align with what users are searching for on Google.

By incorporating relevant keywords naturally into the copy of your core pages, you enhance its visibility to potential visitors who are actively seeking information or solutions related to those specific terms.

So how do you find the perfect keywords?

There are various places to do keyword research for your website, but here are my favorites:

When doing keyword research for the core pages of your website, you want to look for keywords that have commercial intent. This specific kind of search intent means that someone is looking for something to buy, ensuring that your copy aligns with what users are looking for.

Besides intent, there are 2 other factors to consider:

  • Search volume. This represents how many people are searching for this keyword every month. Unless you have a very niche offering, aim for a search volume of at least 100. You can also take into account the global volume for a keyword.

  • Keyword difficulty or competition. This is on a scale of 100. 0-30 means it's easier to rank whereas 70-100 means it's very difficult to rank for this keyword.

Each core page of your website should target a specific, unique keyword. This is your primary keyword. Many times, your home page won't need a keyword. But your about page and services pages should all have one.

Here are some examples:

  • About page primary keyword: “Colorado wedding photographer”

  • Wedding services primary keyword: “Colorado wedding photography”

  • Engagement services primary keyword: “Colorado engagement photography”

Conversion optimization through persuasive writing techniques

SEO copywriting goes beyond just optimizing for search engines; it also focuses on persuading readers to take desired actions.

Adopting persuasive writing techniques such as compelling headlines, clear calls-to-action, storytelling elements, and addressing pain points helps maximize conversions.

By crafting powerful copy that resonates with your target audience's needs and desires, you can boost engagement levels and drive more qualified leads or sales for your business.

Tips for Writing SEO Copy that Converts

Know Your Audience

Create content that speaks directly to your target audience.

Understanding demographic and psychographic information is crucial in crafting effective SEO copywriting.

Understand their needs, desires, and pain points to craft compelling copy that resonates with them. By addressing their specific concerns, you can engage them on a deeper level and increase the chances of conversion.

Finally, analyzing competitor content helps you identify gaps in the market, allowing you to provide unique and valuable insights that set you apart from the competition. With these strategies in place, you can create targeted and impactful content that resonates with your audience while driving organic traffic to your website.

Create a Compelling Call to Action

Don't forget to include a strong call to action (CTA) in your SEO copy. A well-crafted CTA can significantly boost conversions and drive desired actions from your audience.

Clearly guide your readers on what they should do next, whether it's signing up for a newsletter, making a purchase, or contacting you for more information.

Using action verbs that prompt immediate response is essential for creating a compelling call to action. Encourage your audience to "sign up now," "start today," or "get instant access."

By using strong, actionable language, you can motivate your readers to take the desired action immediately.

Highlighting the benefits of taking action can greatly increase conversion rates. Clearly communicate how your product or service will solve their problem, save them time or money, or improve their lives in some way. Showcasing these benefits will make it clear why they should take action and compel them to do so.

Write Persuasive Copy

Crafting captivating headlines that grab attention is crucial for effective copywriting. By using power words and creating a sense of urgency or curiosity, you can entice readers to click and engage with your content.

Use phrases like "limited time only" or "exclusive offer expires soon" to create a sense of urgency and encourage your audience to act quickly before they miss out on the opportunity.

Additionally, using storytelling techniques allows you to connect with readers on an emotional level, making them more likely to be persuaded by your message.

A "show, don't tell" approach is essential when demonstrating the value of your product or service. Instead of simply stating features and benefits, use real-life examples and testimonials to showcase the positive impact it has had on others.

This not only helps build trust but also allows potential customers to envision themselves benefiting from what you have to offer.

Use Social Proof

Including customer testimonials or reviews can significantly enhance your credibility. When potential customers see positive feedback from satisfied clients, they are more likely to trust your services.

Have you gotten incredible results for your clients? It's important to display case studies where you dive deeper into why clients decided to hire you, what they were struggling with, and the specific and tangible results you were able to achieve for them.

Additionally, mentioning reputable partnerships or affiliations can further boost your credentials and instill confidence in potential customers. Collaboration with well-known organizations adds a layer of trustworthiness to your brand and increases the likelihood of conversions.

Utilize the space above the fold

It's important to place clear and compelling copy at the top of your core pages "above-the-fold."

This ensures that when a user lands on your page, there is language visible that entices them to keep reading without requiring them to scroll down.

This is a prime location to capture their attention.

Don't keyword stuff in your website copy

Only include your keywords in your copy a few times. For a standard 1000-1500 services page, you most likely wouldn't want to use the keyword more than 3-5 times or else it will sound spammy.

The last thing you want to do is negatively impact the user experience because that would defeat the purpose of trying to get people to your website from Google (if they're just going to jump because your copy is too hard to read).

I added this point towards the bottom specifically because business owners make this the key focus instead of writing exceptional copy that connects with their audience.

I believe that the optimization pieces comes after you've written your copy for this exact reason.

Include your keywords in your headings

Hierarchical organization with headings and subheadings helps to structure your content in a logical manner.

This not only enhances readability but also enables search engines to understand the hierarchy of information on your page, leading to better indexing and ranking.

Your primary keyword should go in your Heading 1 or H1 tag. This is the only H1 tag should have on your page, which is a common mistake I see.

If it sounds natural, you can add your keyword in one or two Heading 2 tags.

Measuring the Success of SEO Copywriting

Measuring the success of SEO copywriting involves monitoring keyword rankings, tracking website traffic, and analyzing conversion rates.

Monitor Keyword Rankings

Implement keyword tracking tools to stay updated on the performance of your target keywords to determine if your content is optimizing search engine visibility. These tools provide valuable insights into how your website ranks in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Regularly check SERP rankings to identify any fluctuations and adjust your SEO strategy accordingly. Analyze organic search traffic to understand which keywords are driving the most visitors to your site, allowing you to optimize for those specific terms.

You can use the SEO tools mentioned above or set up Google Search Console (highly recommend) if you want a free option.

Track Website Traffic

Utilize web analytics platforms like Google Analytics to track and analyze your website's traffic.

You can set up goals and conversion tracking to measure the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. Important website metrics you can monitor are page views, bounce rates, and session durations to identify areas for improvement.

Analyze Conversion Rates

Define the actions you want users to take on your website, such as submitting a form or making a purchase. By clearly defining these conversion actions, you can track and calculate conversion rates for different landing pages.

Analyzing user behavior allows you to identify areas of improvement and optimize your website for higher conversions.

These metrics provide valuable insights into the performance of your SEO copywriting efforts and enable you to make data-driven improvements for better results.

Beyond Copywriting: Importance of Content Writing

Optimizing the copy of the core pages on your website is important, but that doesn't guarantee a page 1 ranking.

Think of it as a starting point. Typically, there is much more work to be done after you've set the foundation for your website.

High-quality content produced on your blog can play a crucial role in improving search engine rankings. Google and other search engines prioritize websites that offer valuable, relevant, and well-written content to users.

There are many reasons to be blogging for your business [so no, blogging is not dead ;)]

By creating informative and engaging content that satisfies user intent, you can increase your chances of ranking higher in the search engine results pages (SERPs) and attracting organic traffic.

For blog posts, you want to ensure that the search intent for your topics is “informative.”

Don't underestimate the power of content marketing. This is how you'll boost the core pages of your website and rank higher for your website.
