3 Creative Ways to Use Squarespace Summary Blocks

One of the best aspects of Squarespace’s website building platform is its summary block feature.

If you’re not familiar with them already, Squarespace summary blocks display your content in easy-to-navigate groups, whether it’s blog posts, products, events, or something else entirely.

Summary blocks can be displayed as grids, carousels, lists, or walls, leaving the possibilities for creativity completely open!

There are SO many creative ways to use these blocks to make your website easier to navigate and to showcase your website material in an organized, aesthetic way.

Not only that, but it also allows you to put the spotlight on content that may be difficult to find on your website through your navigation menu.

Today, I’ll be covering my three favorite uses for Squarespace summary blocks: advertising blog posts, showcasing testimonials, and promoting events.

While these aren’t the list of exhaustive ways to use the blocks, I chose them all because of their ability to help you make the most of your website!

Advertise Blog Posts

One of the best and most popular ways to use Squarespace summary blocks is using them to advertise past posts on your Squarespace blog.

If you have certain blog posts on your site that are especially relevant to new visitors, such as an introduction to your services, a post that received great feedback from your audience, or a how-to that provides immediate value to new users, you can advertise them in order to keep visitors on your website!

Simply adding these posts to a summary block on your homepage where they can be spotted by new visitors will help lower the bounce rate of your site (the rate of users who visit the page and immediately click off your website) by enticing them with new, exciting material.

Need help deciding which blog posts to promote?

While you can certainly advertise your most recent posts, choosing blog posts that are most likely to get clicks by new visitors will have the biggest effect on your bounce rate.

Explore the analytics of your past blog posts to find out which ones did best, and add them to your summary blocks, along with those that give new users the most information about you and your services.

Squarespace will automatically make recent posts the default, but you can change that through the display options (explained below).

You can also sort your blog posts by categories and tags.

Showcase Testimonials

It’s no secret that testimonials are one of the most important parts booking clients for for any service based business. Not only do testimonials encourage people to book your services, but give them confidence that they are going to get great value in return.

For this reason, showcasing testimonials that display your past clients’ trust in you and your services is a great way to use Squarespace summary blocks.

Add a summary block to your homepage or services page for an easy way to showcase your top testimonials that entice new users to book with you in an organized way that complements the style and theme of your website.

Promote Events

Lastly, one of the best (and most creative!) ways to utilize summary blocks is to promote events. Keep in mind, every entrepreneur can advertise events - not just those running organizations or companies who hold in-person events!

Some virtual events that you can advertise on your website to promote your services and connect with potential clients are Instagram live events, paid programs, or free trainings.

Not only do these let visitors know that you are involved outside of just working one-on-one with clients and that you’re committed to your brand, but entice them to come back for an event that will provide them information or value.

For this reason, some of the best events to promote on Squarespace summary blocks are events that cater to new or potential clients, such as freebies!

(This is also a great way to incorporate your email list into summary blocks. Simply require an email address and ask for consent to add to your list in order to register for the events you’re advertising!)

Getting Started

Adding summary blocks to your Squarespace website doesn’t have to be hard!

I’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process with ease and get your blocks up and running in no time!

  1. To create and place your summary block, click the “edit” button on a page or post and then, when prompted, select an insertion point where you want your summary block to be on the page.

  2. Choose between a wall, carousel, list, and grid block setup to convey the look you’re wanting. (Keep in mind, when using a carousel, you can’t see all the content at once, but each piece of content gets its own spotlight when users scroll.)

  3. Once you’ve decided on your summary block’s look, you can add content to it by clicking the “content” tab.

  4. From there, use the “layout” and “display” tabs to edit the style further, and make sure it fits your website’s aesthetic.

  5. Click the “apply” button, and you’re ready to go!

I LOVE adding Squarespace summary blocks to my clients’ websites because they can take a page that is muddled and organized and make it look brand new, while promoting content that may have otherwise been lost deep in the caverns of a large website.

I’m confident that Squarespace will allow you to create a fantastic website that caters to potential clients while portraying your business in the BEST possible light, regardless of what type of solopreneur you are!
