Top SEO Tips for Wedding Photographers to Rank Higher on Google

Are you a wedding photographer looking to boost your online presence and attract more clients? You've come to the right place!

As a seasoned Showit and Squarespace website designer, I've helped so many amazing wedding photographers build their online presence. So, I was inspired to share a post on SEO for wedding photographers specifically.

Let’s face it — there's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to marketing, and wedding photographers are no exception.

When it comes to SEO for photographers, there are a few key strategies that can help you stand out from the competition and drive more traffic and quality leads to you.

Let's dive into the basics of SEO for your wedding photography business — including keyword research tools and technical SEO — so you can improve your site's performance and reach your dream clients effectively.

What is SEO for wedding photographers?

SEO (otherwise known as search engine optimization) is a strategy you can implement on your website to help you appear organically in Google search results. In other words, it’s a totally free and evergreen way to market yourself and your brand, especially when paired with effective link building and a well-managed Google Business Profile!

Through SEO, you can appear in Google search results for couples searching the type of photography you do, or even the location you are in (again, without paying for Google Ads).

Google crawls your website to give search engine users the most relevant results. This means that if your website SEO is done well, including technical SEO elements like proper site indexing and crawlability, you will consistently appear on the first page of Google for relevant searches.

How can I improve my wedding photography website's SEO?

Wondering how you can gain more exposure online by driving traffic to your awesome wedding photography website?

That's why I'm here! There are several ways you can improve your SEO as a wedding photographer, which we'll go through one by one.

Use keywords in your website copy

This is perhaps the most well-known aspect of SEO, and is extremely important! It’s also important to remember that you should only target one specific keyword per post or page (usually a longtail, or three+ word keyword that you think you can rank for).

You can find keywords to target via free keyword search tools like Ubersuggest and plugins for Google Chrome.

You can use free keyword research tools like Ubersuggest and plugins for Google Chrome to help you identify popular keywords and phrases that are relevant to your area of expertise within photography.

Let's go over some common keyword suggestions you can use on your website to improve your search engine rankings as a wedding photographer:

  • Wedding photographer: This keyword should be the primary focus as it directly relates to your industry expertise and services.

  • Wedding photography: A subtle variation of your primary keyword that covers a wider range of search queries.

  • Wedding photojournalism: If you specialize in capturing candid moments that tell a story, this keyword can attract clients looking for your specific style.

  • Engagement photography: Many couples opt for engagement shoots before their wedding, so including this keyword can attract your potential clients.

  • Wedding photography packages: Including this keyword can attract potential clients looking for pre-designed photography packages.

  • Wedding photographer in [location]: Adding your location-specific keyword can help you target clients searching for local wedding photographers.

  • Affordable wedding photographer: If you offer budget-friendly packages, including this keyword can attract clients that are a on a tight budget.

Now, while adding keywords is important, Google also takes readability into account and wants you to write for people, not a search engine. So, be sure not to overdo it on keywords — for instance, you might want to refrain from mentioning “Los Angeles wedding photographer” three times in one paragraph.

Remember — getting found on Google doesn’t matter if your content feels spammy or turns people away.

Create blog post content that use strategic keywords

An effective blogging strategy can be a game-changer for your photography business!

By strategically incorporating your unique keywords into your blog posts, you can increase the chances of your content being discovered by your target audience beyond your website copy.

The first step is to identify the keywords that are relevant to your specific services or niche.

As a wedding photographer, you can use the list of keywords mentioned above to get you started, but try to expand on your list of words and phrases that couples may use when searching for the type of information or services you offer.

Once you have a list of keywords, the next step is to strategically incorporate them into your blog post content. This should be done in a way that feels natural and organic, rather than forcing keywords into your content just for the sake of optimization.

Aim to include your keywords in the title of your blog post (your H1), as well as in your subheadings (your H2s and H3s) and within the body of the post itself.

Note: when incorporating keywords into your blog post content, it's important to strike a balance. While keywords are great, it's equally important to create high-quality, valuable content that your readers will find useful and engaging.

Your primary keyword should not in each and every H2 or else it will look spammy.

Don't sacrifice the quality of your content just to include keywords.

Showcase your clients beyond your portfolio

If you’re wondering what to blog about on your website, your clients are a great place to start. Use the photos from your portfolio and write about different shoots, the techniques you used, your clients’ stories — anything goes (with client permission, of course!)

This lets potential new clients get an inside look at your processes and the overall experience of shooting with you.

And, remember — Google loves websites with lots of content when determining which websites rank first, so blogging is a must!

Add links to other internal pages

Remember the link building I was talking about? Well, internal linking in particular, is extremely important, because it helps Google understand your website as a whole and complements your overall link building strategy.

In each blog post and on each page, you should shoot to link to a couple of other pages on your own website. This should happen pretty naturally, as your users will likely follow a flow from your homepage, to your services page, and so on… via links and CTA buttons.

You can get more creative with this process in blog posts, where you can highlight a keyword you’ve written a blog post about and link to that blog post.

For example: “There are various SEO elements I optimize on each website I design that are not only important for search engines, but also for the user experience.” Here, I'm casually and subtly linking to a post about my own services that I offer as an SEO strategist.

You’ll also want to link to your services page in each blog post to transform readers into clients.

You don’t want to woo a reader with your content without offering them the chance to work with you!

Optimize all your images

Want to know an underrated technical SEO tip to improve your site speed? Optimize all images on your website to below 500 KB.

Images play a huge role in enhancing the visual appeal of a website and capturing the attention of visitors. However, huge image files bog down your site, and visitors will likely leave instead of waiting for them to load.

You don’t want to lose new clients by stuffing your website with enormous images! Make it a habit to compress your images whenever possible.

Here are a few other best practices when it comes to optimizing your images for SEO:

  1. Use high-quality images: Start by using high-quality images that are relevant to your content. Blurry or pixelated images can negatively impact user experience and search rankings.

  2. Choose the right file format: Choose the appropriate file format. For photographs, use JPEG/JPG format, while for graphics or logos, use PNG format. Both formats strike a balance between image quality and file size.

  3. Use descriptive file names: Optimize your image file names by using descriptive keywords that are relevant to your content. Instead of generic names like "IMG1234.jpg," use names that describe the image, such as "healthy-meal-preparation.jpg" for a health-related blog post.

  4. Optimize alt text: Alt text (alternative text) is used by search engines to understand the content of an image. Provide clear and concise alt text that accurately describes the image and includes relevant keywords. This helps search engines index your images and improves accessibility.

Optimize title tags and meta descriptions for your core website pages

By focusing on metadata optimization, including title tags and meta descriptions with strategic keywords, you can improve your website's visibility in search engine results and attract more organic traffic. These elements provide a brief summary of your web page's content so that users and search engines can understand what your page is about.

When creating title tags, it's important to include your target keywords naturally and concisely. Aim for a title tag length of around 50-60 characters to ensure that it displays properly on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Your title tag should accurately describe the content of your web page and entice users to click through to your site.

Examples:

  • About page: Dallas Wedding Photographer | Olivia James

  • Portfolio page: Dallas Wedding and Engagement Photography | Olivia James

Meta descriptions, on the other hand, provide a more detailed summary of your web page. While they don't directly impact search engine rankings, they do influence click-through rates.

This means that crafting an engaging and keyword-rich meta description can increase the likelihood of users clicking on your website in search results!

When writing meta descriptions, focus on including your target keywords naturally while also providing a compelling summary of your web page's content. Aim for a length of around 150-160 characters to ensure that your meta description is displayed in full on SERPs.

Examples:

  • About page: Olivia is a wedding photographer based in Dallas, Texas. Learn more about her story and love for capturing the big moments.

  • Portfolio page: I've been a professional photographer for the past 5 years, capturing countless weddings. Click to view my favorite galleries.

Remember, both title tags and meta descriptions should accurately represent your web page's content. Avoid keyword stuffing or using misleading titles and descriptions, as this can negatively impact your website's credibility and user experience.

How else can I market myself as a wedding photographer?

Of course, website keywords aren't the only way to market yourself as a wedding photographer and improve your SEO; a properly optimized Google Business Profile can also significantly enhance your online presence.

There are other ways to do it, as well — some of which you might not have known actually contribute to SEO, too.

Social Media (Instagram and Facebook)

Staying active on social platforms allows your audience to engage with you and see what you’re all about.

It also ensures that, when someone searches your business name or name on Google, the first several results lead to your platforms. (The last thing you want is for someone to search “YOUR NAME Photography” and end up on someone else’s website!)

In other words, Instagram and Facebook also appear in search results along with your website, giving people a better chance of finding you.

Partnerships and Backlinking

You can also ask vendors you partner with to post a link to your website on their website and feature positive reviews on your Google Business Profile. This is obviously great for lead generation, but doing so creates something called a backlink, which tells Google’s SEO analyzers that your website has more authority and should show up first in search results.

You can build backlinks is by listing your wedding photography business on reputable directories and review sites. Platforms like The Knot, WeddingWire, and local business directories can boost your online presence and provide valuable backlinks to your website.

You can also create informative blog posts, stunning photo galleries, and helpful resources that others in the industry will want to share and link back to.

Maintaining a strong relationship with past clients, engaging in social media activities, participating in forums, and joining online communities relevant to wedding photography can also help you establish valuable connections and secure backlinks.

Referrals

Getting genuine referrals is another key way to market your business. Just do great work with your existing clients, and they’ll be likely to recommend you to a friend — and so on. Never underestimate the power of organic networking!

Google

Lastly, of course, there is Google itself — which is where all of your SEO efforts will pay off. Google is an excellent way to get found because your website actually establishes more authority as it ages, instead of getting buried by new posts (like on social media.)

For this reason, SEO content for Google is evergreen — and a great time investment.

SEO for wedding photographers: Key takeaways

At the end of the day, there are endless ways you can market your wedding photography business, but showing up wherever your clients are is essential — and chances are, if they're looking for your services, they're hopping straight to Google!

This is where having an effective SEO strategy comes into play because it increases your online visibility so that you're right in front of potential clients that are looking for you.

Let's recap how you can create SEO-friendly content:

  1. Keyword research: Start by conducting keyword research to identify the relevant terms that potential clients may use when searching for wedding photographers. Tools like Ubersuggest or SEMrush can help you discover popular keywords and their search volume.

  2. Optimize your website: Make sure your website is optimized for search engines. This includes using relevant keywords in your page titles, headings, meta descriptions, and URLs. Incorporate keywords naturally within your content, but avoid keyword stuffing, as it can harm your rankings.

  3. Create valuable blog posts: Blogging is an excellent way to create content that ranks well in search engines. Write informative and engaging blog posts that offer tips, advice, or inspiration for couples planning their weddings. Optimize your blog posts using keywords (again, don't overdo it here), image alt tags, and interlinking relevant pages on your website.

  4. Image optimization: Wedding photography is a visual medium, so your images will do a lot of the talking, so to speak. Use descriptive file names and alt tags that include relevant keywords. Compress your images to improve loading speed, as this is a crucial ranking factor.

  5. Guest blogging and partnerships: Collaborating with wedding planners, venues, or other wedding vendors can help you expand your reach and generate quality backlinks to your website. Always look for opportunities to write guest posts on reputable wedding blogs to increase your reach.
